Being that this is the first serious Normally Aspirated car I have modified, it is a definite trick to gain horsepower from it. With a strong background in turbo cars, the basics of boost, air flow, and exhausts is what we go off of. With the 996 highly tuned stock NA motor, this is much different. However like many cars, the factory air box is designed to be quiet, fuel efficient, and produce just enough air flow to gain acceptable horsepower. Since Porsche as a manufacturer does build cars from their race program, there is not to much to focus on with increasing performance. However they still play it safe and that is where the billion dollar aftermarket industry comes into play.
To start our engine modifications we wanted to improve air flow. With our final goal of ECU tuning and an exhaust system, we begin with a new intake. Currently there is 2 options on the market for the dollar. A K&N flat panel filter which retains the factory air box, or the EVOMS V-Flow Intake Kit which basically is a masterpiece for Porsche drivers and tuners. This V-Flow system is a complete rotomold intake box that directs air to a K&N style cone filter that feeds air to the throttle body via a steel high flow intake pipe. This intake pipe uses the factory MAF which is very sensitive to air changes. However EVOMS has this fitted properly to not affect the air metered substantially.
Once installed the EVOMS intake really brings alive the Porsche 996 engine. Giving the car much quicker throttle response, a better engine noise, and a kick in the pants in the higher RPM’s. Even without ECU tuning this modification is a huge improvement over stock. Like any mod, it is part of a building block for the final puzzle.
