In order to get cold air into a hot engine bay, the air filter is usually mounted in the front fender area, away from the heat. Although this is usually great, it opens up the filter to getting wet. Water getting into your engine unchecked is never a good thing. So Injen developed the Hydo-Shield, to help prevent saturating the filter if splashed by water.

When used in dusty conditions it can also extend the filter cleaning interval by filtering and keeping much of the dirt from the air filter.
