I recently had this gearset installed on my '04 WRX. After absolutley destroying my stock tranny, my main goal was to have a more durable gearbox without spending an insane amount of money for either a STI or dogbox transmission. According to various publications and reviews, this is the case with the Type RA gearset. What I wasn't expecting was the close ratio aspect associated with it. First, the pros.--there's a noticable difference in acceleraton times. Without using a stopwatch, I have very little doubt that at least a half second is knocked off my 1/4 mile time (from low 13s with the stock tranny compared to high or mid 12s with the Type RA). The RPMs are in the power band throughout the run, making my car an absolute joy to drive. Now the con.--fuel consumption is riduculous. Luckily for me, I don't do a lot of highway driving. Cruising at 70 mph, I'm sitting at almost 4000 rpm. This is due to, of course, the close ration aspect.
I would recommend this gearset to anyone who's added significant HP and torque to his/her WRX, because let me tell you first hand. The stock gearset is WEAK. For $1800 or so, it sure beats going broke when paying $5000-8000 on a STI or dogbox.
