Phase XII - Better Bang For The Buck
Phase XII - Better Bang For The Buck

Being an everyday driver as well seeing some track use it’s obvious that the fuel maps could be leaned out a bit to give up a little more H/P and better gas mileage. As of this writing there is no such item available though separate companies are scrambling to come up with some form of engine management to assault this issue. Until then I must look elsewhere and I found it from Nology. These guys are most noted for there sponsored drag cars and and domestic applications but now they are making a leap into the import market as well. The make some of the best spark plug wires on the market so it was natural that I look them up and give them a call. Sure enough they had an application so I began to research their current offering. Nology HotWires are engineered with a special built-in capacitor, exclusive only to HotWires. This revolutionary design allows energy from the ignition coil to accumulate in the capacitor until the voltage at the spark plug electrodes reaches the ionization point. At that split second point the entire power of the stored spark is discharged at once, creating a spark 300 times more powerful. The result is faster, more complete combustion. The Renesis spawn from the 13B from earlier RX7s, has two plugs per cylinder giving a total of 4 wires to replace. Sounds and looks like an easy install at this point and surprisingly, it was!

Removal of the main engine cover reveals the motor and the plug wires are visible on the driver’s side of the engine. I would yet again have to dig into my Jedi dexterity bag of tricks to get my hand down to the plugs to uncap the wires. The sequence of installation isn’t as important as keeping the correct plug and coil pack connected. This is made easy by removing/installing one at a time. Once they are all connected and secured on to the plugs and coil packs the individual grounding straps need to be fasted. A near by engine block bolt serves as a great anchor and is long enough to stack all the straps and tighten down. That’s it. All done. 30 min total.

Right away the engine feels smoother at idle and the headlights don’t dim as much when the little throttle is applied. Acceleration feels slightly snappier and after a few tanks of gas a net gain of 4-mpg city/ highway made me happy. Bottom line, the Nology wires did what they claimed to do and there fore get the thumbs up.
