Differential Covers

Cover Up with These Differential Covers

The standard differential cover's primary purpose is to allow the differential, bearings, ring, and pinion gear within the axle casing to be arranged and repaired. The cover also protects the underlying modules from soil, dust, and humidity. Differential covers are usually made of steel stampings. They are mounted on the solid rear drive axles on several vehicles and the solid front drive axles on particular four-wheel-drive trucks.

That being said, differential cover configuration and construction materials can depend on when vehicles are fitted with devices such as independent suspension and differential oil coolers. Even so, no matter what sort of differential and axle configuration is on your car, if you'd like a new differential cover, you'll check and find it right here on our online store.

Differential covers became necessary since most car makers moved to integral axle systems where steel axle tubes are connected directly to the cast iron differential case. This style of axle assembly is more comfortable and cheaper to manufacture. Differential covers also allow the removal and installation of the "C-clip" axle shafts used on several reliable drive axle assemblies. These axles spin on roller bearings pushed into the axle tubes' endpoints and are maintained, in the differential housing, by C-shaped clips that match the ridges of the axle shafts' depths in the differential side gears.

Although stamped steel differential covers still provide excellent services on solid axles, which become the chosen driving axles for most trucks, they will be insufficient for many of the axle housings used on the growing number of independent suspension vehicles.

Rather than being fixed to the suspension components and going up and down as the suspension responds to road disturbances, as the solid axle does, with an individual suspension, the driving axle is mounted on the car body and mostly consists of nothing more than the differential housing. Besides covering and giving access to the differential internals, the differential covers for these vehicles provide a dual-duty mounting point for the differential assembly and accommodate one or even more differential mounts.

Such covers are heavy castings engineered from iron or aluminum instead of stamped steel. Some performance cars start with or include available differential oil coolers, and the differential covers on these vehicles also have the cooler line points of attachment.

Differential covers are usually very durable components, but their mounting position often makes them vulnerable to significant damage to contaminants, foreign objects, and road debris in response to degradation due to extreme heat and maturity. Extreme temperatures and conditions can harden differential gaskets, leading to leakage. Exposure to water and road salt can stain stamped steel covers, and severe oxidation can cause puncture and leakage of fluids.

Whether caused by road debris impact injury, corrosion, or gasket breakdown, differential leakage must not be overlooked. If replacements are not made reasonably, lubrication shortage could result in more costly damage to the differential components, ring and pinion gears, and the bearings. In addition to leakage, cast iron and cast aluminum coatings can also be susceptible to stress cracking and extreme casting failure.

Regardless of the signs and the need for maintenance, we have the replacement differential covers to ensure adequate oil preservation, vehicle quality, and reliability. We sell differential covers and associated systems that comply with the original equipment requirements so that when work is done, you can rely on the efficiency and reliability of your car.

In addition to these kinds of differential covers, we also have differential covers for seals and O-rings, cover for mounting bolts, and cover for drain and fill plugs and gaskets. So you'll get everything you need to fix them, and all of our stamped steel covers are coated to avoid degradation.
