The Alcon Brake Advantage as Seen on the SRT Viper

When it comes to big brake brands that are tried and proven in the racing world, a couple brands come up.  Of course there is Brembo, no explanation needed.  AP Racing is another and actually part of the Brembo family.  Then you have American based StopTech and their successes in World Challenge racing.  Finally, there is the UK boys at Alcon Brakes which have made a strong entry in the big brake game.  Not only can they be found on top tuner cars like this SRT Viper, a Nissan GT-R, and others, Alcon participates strongly in Nascar, Rally Car, JGTC, and even Offroad truck racing.  The engineering and development that goes into their billet calipers, slotted curved 2 piece rotors, ceramic rotors, and other products is nothing short of OEM quality.  Here at Vivid Racing we recently had the opportunity to install their new 6piston monoblock big brake kit on our Project Viper.

Coming from the factory is a odd setup of Brembo calipers with StopTech 2 piece rotors.  There must had been some serious testing by SRT to come to this decision as they are definitely peanut butter and jelly.  Each will say their piece, they can work together, but one must be refridgerated at all times!  So this Alcon BBK is to replace the front kit only.  With the massive V10 and most of the vehicle weight in the front, this is where the braking needs improvement or could be improved.  Our wheel setup is a 20 inch front and 21 inch rear so has plenty of clearance.  Though we tested the clearance on the stock 19 inch front wheels with no problems.  The Advantage Extreme kit includes calipers, brackets, steel braided lines, brake pads, and rotors.

We don’t have the facility or means of testing the brakes back to back, but from experience and pure stats, the Alcon kit will highly out brake the OEM setup.  Without going overboard like a competition GT car, this big brake kit is great for those looking to get more for the weekend events.  Pads can only go so far and when you need better braking, bigger will be better!  The brake stats are:

  • 6 piston monoblock for best stiffness / weight ratio
  • 27/32/38 staggered piston sizes for optimum pressure distribution with no pad taper
  • Durable black epoxy acrylic paint finish
  • 370 x 32mm Rotors
  • 48 curved vane
  • Semi-floating hat with stainless steel hardware
  • Increased thermal capacity
  • Alcon crescent groove pattern provides maximum bite
  • Ferodo DS Performance pad material
  • 19% increase in pad area

Vivid Racing carries the entire Alcon Brake Catalog here.  If you have questions just comment away or contact one of our Brake Specialists here.
