There is no denying that the BMW F8X M3/M4 are fast cars. With 425+ horsepower, it’s a beast of a car and car easily slay almost any other sports car in its category. Of course, enthusiasts always want more. Sure the F8X fast, but what if you could make it even faster? Luckily, BMW has adopted turbocharged engines which means squeezing more power out of the M3 is much easier than it was with previous generations. If you can get more air to the turbochargers, then the turbos can create more boost. The OEM air filters and piping are restrictive and don’t allow air to flow freely to the turbocharger, so eliminating that restriction will result in more power. This is the idea behind a cold air intake.
Simply supplying more air to the turbo is not enough. Hot air is less dense compared to cold air, which means you are effectively taking in less air overall. Hot air mixed with fuel is also more likely to detonation from pressure, especially in a turbocharged application since compressed air is significantly hotter than non-compressed air. All this matters, because a poorly designed intake will suck in hot air from under the hood instead of the cool air just outside the engine bay. Agency Power accounted for all these things with their new intake and relocated the filters right behind the kidney grills. This allows the filters to pull in tons of cool air from outside the engine bay, resulting in much lower intake air temperature, lower charge air temperatures, and more power.
Further improving intake air temperature, Agency Power designed this new intake with a roto-molded plastic intake tube, which does not retain nearly as much heat as the competitor’s intakes, which again, results in lower intake air temperatures and more power. The filter features NanoTech, which improves filtration without sacrificing flow. The filters are also reusable for the life of the vehicle, and the improved filtration will reduce the number of particles scratching the cylinder walls.
Unfortunately, there is a downside to having such a high flowing design, and that’s the factory ECU not understanding what is going on. A check engine light will come on after installation of this intake without a tune. With a tune, however, the ECU is perfectly happy. As tested on our in-house dyno before the tune, we found peak gains of up to 27whp, with solid gains throughout the power band. With a tune or other modifications, the gains can be even larger.
