ECU Tuning the Mazda 6 2.5L SkyActive Engine by VR Tuned

As an enthusiast, when you think of Mazda, you might think about the Miata, RX7, RX8, MS3, MS6, etc. For many people, those Mazdas simple don’t fulfill their needs. The Mazda 6 is incredibly popular thanks to its affordable price and larger size. The Skyactiv-G engine under the hood is very efficient, but it’s a little underpowered for the Mazda 6.

What’s awesome about the Skyactiv-G engine is the high-compression ratio. Most naturally aspirated production cars have a compression ratio of 12:1 or less, however, Skyactiv-G engines have a compression ratio of 14:1! They worked hard on making that high compression ratio possible, but even with all that work on the Skyactiv-G engine, they still left some performance on the table.

Skyactiv-G is almost entirely hardware related, as most of it relies on reducing cylinder temperatures to reduce the possibility of knock. Where Mazda left performance on the table is with the stock tune. Mazda’s tune is very conservative, holding air/fuel ratios and ignition timing way back. They hold power back to improve emissions and keep the engine extra safe.

The VR Tuned Solution:

Luckily, our tuning division, VR Tuned, offers a solution to this conservative tune. With the VR Tuned ECU flash, you are taking the stock parameters the ECU tries to stay within and change them. The result is slightly more aggressive ignition timing, air/fuel ratio, and reduced limiters, as well as many other small changes.

Of course, we don’t just make your car run super aggressive, as that would reduce long-term reliability. The goal of our tune is to increase power without sacrificing the reliability of your Skyactiv-G engine. Once our tune is installed, you expect a +20 horsepower increase and a +18 ft-lb of torque increase.

Unlike some other tunes on the market, you can install this tune yourself with an optional DimSport device, which is exactly what the customer below decided to do with their Mazda 6!

If you have any questions about the VR Tuned ECU Flash for Mazda Skyactiv-G or would like to purchase parts for your car, please do not hesitate to contact us. We can be reached by phone at 1.480.966.3040 or via email at sales@vividracing.com.

Do you offer a tune for the 250hp SKYACTIV-G 2.5L Dynamic Pressure Turbo with VVT as in the 2018 Mazda6 Signature?

    Hi Dan

I have a 6 2.5 and I’m looking for something like this upgrade, but will this ECU upgrade “mess” with the way that the engine settings is working right now in regards to Eco/Sport settings that the Mazda has ?

And will I also benefit from a new exhaust system ?

    Best Regards

  3. Bryce Cleveland says:

Everything should still work regarding your settings. An aftermarket exhaust will improve flow and increase power.

  4. Bryce Cleveland says:

Unfortunately, that is not an application we currently support.
