History of KW Suspension and Why It is the Preferred Coilover

Here is some background on KW automotive GmbH and the company philosophy behind its suspension systems.  Vivid Racing is a proud partner of KW and uses them on our very own Porsche 997 Turbo and is one of the top dealers in the USA.  KW is a true enterprise that not only engineers their own equipment, they test and prove it in motorsports and daily driving tests as well.  KW automotive was founded by Klaus Wolfarth in 1992 originally as KW Tuning in Murrhardt Germany. By 1996, KW had changed its concentration from tuning in general to become a coilover specialist to serve the German market and its stringent TUV certification demands for all aftermarket products on the road. Within another four short years, the company had developed enough technical expertise to build coilovers for everything between slammed show cars to professional touring race cars.

What sets KW suspension apart from other competitors ranging from giants like Sachs, Koni and Bilstein and other small scale motorsports only brands like Moton is that KW remains a company founded and ran by enthusiasts. This means that the company is small, flexible and most importantly in touch with what street and sport tuners want in a suspension that can be driven every day. While KW’s coilover technology is unquestionable in its ability to be used in racing (as seen from its four consecutive overall victories at the 24hr of Nurburgring), the company also recognizes the different needs between street products of its main customers and the track products needed by its competition customers.

This is why KW chooses to use a twin tube damper for its Variant 1-3 product range while monotube coilovers are reserved for motorsports applications. The bottom line is that street cars do not require the damping forces as seen on a race car and the twin tube also has inherent advantages in comfort, serviceability, stroke length and robustness for street use.

To increase the versatility of the KW coilovers, KW engineers had developed a patented internal valve design that allows for independent adjustment of the low speed compression and rebound damping forces as found in its Variant 3 and Clubsport coilover products. This further extends the capabilities of the twin tube shock absorber.

As a company founded by racers and street enthusiasts, KW suspensions continues to develop and build coilover products that not only provide proper lowering for vehicles, but also exceptional performance, comfort and safety whether on the autobahn or badly maintained country roads.
