With any turbocharged vehicle it can sometimes be common to overheat spark plugs. This can cause the electrode to melt and triggers pre-ignition. Damage to the engine can occur if the spark plugs are not properly rated.
HKS released their Super Fire Racing line spark plugs specifically designed for the FK8 Civic Type R. When modifying the FK8 many owners have experienced pre-ignition due to the increased heat in the combustion chamber. The cooling system can only do so much.
The optimal temperature range for spark plugs is 932-1,400 degrees Fahrenheit. HKS Super Fire spark plugs have a no.9 NGK heat range which is slightly cooler than the factory. A cooler spark plug focuses more insulation mass around the electrode.
With increased insulation mass, the electrode is able to withstand higher heat without melting. Being that iridium is a delicate material, it is important to keep the tip cool under high heat. HKS engineered the perfect spark plug for the FK8 to provide maximum spark efficiency.
