KW Releases V1 and V3 Coilovers for BMW E30

The BMW E30 has long been a favorite amongst enthusiasts and novice level racers. It’s no supercar, but with some very simple modifications it can be a very competent street or track car. KW Suspension is introducing their Variant 1 and Variant 3 coilovers to the E30 chassis. The KW V1 and V3 feature forged steering knuckles on the front struts, meaning the process of using the original struts when converting to a modern suspension system is no longer required. This makes installation extremely easy to do right in your driveway or shop.

Variant 1

You may be wondering why you even need aftermarket coilover suspension. If you just use your E30 to get from point A to point B and have no interest in improving the driving experience, then there is nothing wrong with the stock suspension. Once you install some sporty tires, however, the stock suspension won’t be able to keep up with the increased grip levels. This is where coilover suspension comes in, allowing you to use sticky tires without overworking the suspension.

The Variant 1 system is relatively barebones with no adjustability of the dampening. There is, however, height adjustment. You may be worried that no adjustability could be a problem, but KW has worked hard on fine-tuning these coilovers to improve the handling of the E30 chassis without making the ride quality terrible. Sure, compression and rebound adjustability would be nice especially if you go to the track, but for street driving it’s not necessary.

Variant 3

The Variant 3 coilovers add the ability to individually adjust compression and rebound setting with a small knob on top of the coilover. There are 16 clicks throughout the rotation of the knob which helps simplify the process of tuning your suspension. If you plan on going to the track with extremely sticky tires, stiffening up the suspension may be a good idea. For street driving, however, you may want to loosen it up to provide better ride quality.

Summary

Both of these coilover kits massively improve how the E30 handles without ruining the ride quality. This is possible thanks to KW’s experience and the massive amount of time they spend fine-tuning their products. It should be noted that these coilovers will NOT work on the AWD ix-models, but will work on any other 2WD E30. If you want to improve the driving experience of your E30, then the new KW V1 and V3 coilovers are perfect for you.
