Although turbocharged engines are awesome and provide lots of tunability, power, and great driving experience, they aren’t perfect. When you compress air, it hears up. The turbocharger is already very hot, as super hot exhaust gases power it, so the air compressed air coming out of the turbocharger is very hot. Hot is less dense than cold air and also much more likely to cause detonation during the compression stroke. The job of the intercooler is to cool this super hot air to an acceptable level before pushing it into the engine.
Most factory intercoolers do a good job at bringing charge air temperatures down to a reasonable level before it enters the engine, but with a bigger and more efficient intercooler, you can increase power. With that larger volume, the intercooler is much better at cooling the charge air temps. The result?
