In the past, Honda’s Type R vehicles came equipped with high revving naturally aspirated engines. With the new FK8 Civic Type R, however, Honda changed up their formula by adding a turbocharged. This allowed for an impressive 306 horsepower and 295 ft-lbs, more than any other Civic before it. As an enthusiast, leaving a vehicle completely stock isn’t a favorable option. One of the biggest challenges any turbocharged engine has to deal with is heat. Part of the problem with the design of production turbochargers is that the compressor side and exhaust side are right next to each other. This effectively makes the compressor side extremely hot. On top of that, as air becomes compressed its temperature increases. To put it simply, the compressed air coming out of your turbocharger is extremely hot, and the purpose of the intercooler is to bring that compressed air down to a reasonable temperature before entering the engine.
