Suspension Overview: AST 5000 Series for FRS/BRZ/GT86

When it comes to how your vehicle handles, there are two major factors: the tires you are using and the suspension setup. If you want to get serious about going to track days, autocross events, or just canyon driving, then you’ll want the best of the best. This is where the AST 5000 Series of coil-overs comes into play. Although the 5000 series is more expensive than most coil-overs, it’s due to the extremely high build quality. Plus AST does a ton of research and development to ensure you end up with a product that will adequately improve handling, whereas many cheap coil-overs can hurt handling.

Part of what makes the 5000 series so special is the inverted shock design, which creates an extremely strong damper. This provides better suspension geometry under hard braking or cornering. Inverted shock technology has been race proven as a superior design, but AST is one of the few suspension manufacturers taking advantage of this technology to create better products. In addition to the inverted shocks are the optional adjustable raised top mount, allowing 30mm of lowering range without losing any usable stroke. This system is also offered for compatibility with the OEM top mounts.

We know how tempting it is to give your car that slammed look by lowering your coil-overs to the max, but this can reduce suspension stroke, making it more likely that you’ll bottom out and need to use higher spring rates. AST focuses on making sure their shocks have as much usable suspension stroke as possible, which will allow you to have a very low car that still handles amazingly. The AST 5000 series can be built for custom spring rates and damper specifications offering endless possibilities for almost any application.
