An air pressure gauge is an instrument used to measure the amount of pressure exerted by air or similar gases. It is a mechanical device that translates the force of a pneumatic system into a visual dial indicator calibrated to represent the air pressure. Air pressure gauges can be installed on process lines to indicate the pressure inside the pipe or on equipment such as compressors. They are simple to install, are robust, and require little to no maintenance to properly and quickly know air pressure within a system.
Air is a compressible media. The pressure exerted by air in a closed system is inversely proportional to the volume of the air. If the system is open, the air pressure will be equal to atmospheric pressure. Pressurized air is therefore achieved by the reduction of the volume of the air. This pressurized air finds multiple applications in domestic processes such as inflating balloons, bicycles, car tires, etc. Pressurized air is also used in commercial and industrial processes for actuating valves in pneumatic systems, robotics, flight control, etc.
The majority of air pressure gauges will measure what is considered gauge pressure. Gauge pressure is the positive pressure within a system minus atmospheric pressure. If the reading is negative, it means the system is in a vacuum (also called vacuum pressure). Absolute pressure is the pressure within a system (positive or negative) plus atmospheric pressure. Therefore, it is important to the type of pressure measurement you need for the application and what the air pressure gauge is reading.
