Body Armor - Body Armor

What is the Importance of a Motorcycle Body Armor?

Motorcycle protection gear is crucial when you're riding. All The Gear, All The Time is a ritual and a way of thinking that should be followed when we ride. Defensive riding can prevent most accidents, but protective gear, including a motorcycle body armor, can save your life when defensive riding is not enough.

Body armor is a piece of motorcycle safety equipment that is often forgotten and rarely discussed. Helmets are the first thing you've talked about, because they protect your head and neck, and are essentially the highest protection priority. Riding a helmet has a direct relationship to your chances of surviving a motorcycle accident, but what about other protective gear?

Jackets, gloves, riding pants, and riding suits are all items that help save your skin, protect your bones, and prevent serious sprains from occurring in the event of an accident. In some way, each of these items contains body armor. High density foam paired with carbon fiber or Kevlar composite abrasion panels is the most prominent form of body armor available for motorcycle safety gear. They will provide impact and abrasion protection to all major and minor joints with the highest potential for impact during an accident.

Does It Work?

There will always be a question about the effect of motorcycle-specific driving gear and whether body armor makes a difference. Although there are not many studies on the effectiveness of body armor, there is no argument that motorcycle body armor provides more protection than riding without it. We've known riders who walked away from high-speed crashes on a closed course with nothing more than a bruised ego. The protective gear had an internal body armor that protected it from initial impact and subsequent abrasion as it slid to a stop.

Types of Body Armor

Armored Jackets

Armored jackets are designed to fit over the torso and provide protection to the front, chest and back. They provide excellent impact and abrasion protection for your chest and back, but do not provide any protection for your arms. Most have a hard abrasion resistant outer core and a padded interior that works well under a jacket or can be worn over a shirt or sweatshirt.

Motorcycle specific jackets are typically armed at significant impact points, such as the back , shoulders, and elbows. Materials can be leather, mesh, Kevlar hybrid, or textiles that can be better suited to all-weathers. They usually have inside and outside pockets and tightening mechanisms around the neck and wrists (straps or snaps).

Armored Suits

Riding suits come in a variety of materials and options for pockets, closures and materials. You may enjoy a one-piece suit that gives you a racing feel, even if it's made for all-weather riding. Beyond the one-piece option, there are two-piece suits that connect around the waist to simulate a one-piece suit and add extra weather protection while riding. You can also use your jacket or pants separately on a ride, where a one-piece is an all or nothing option.

Both suits offer strategic armor placement in the shoulders, back, elbows, hips, legs, and knees. They typically feature chinch-up wrists and ankles to help with wind and weather penetration. Leather and Kevlar Hybrid are great in hot summer months, especially when you need extra abrasion protection. If you're going to ride in the rain and wind, a textile material does a great job of shedding water.
