Goodyear - Goodyear Tires

Goodyear Tires

In 1898, Frank Seiberling founded the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio.

The company was named after Charles Goodyear, the man who developed vulcanized rubber. Seiberling borrowed $3,500 from a brother-in-law to purchase the company's first factory. Goodyear initially employed thirteen workers, but the company quickly emerged as a rubber goods production leader, including bicycle tires, pneumatic carriages, automotive tires, horseshoes, and hoses. By 1926, Goodyear was the world's largest rubber company.

Goodyear has led the industry in the development of new products. In 1903, the company developed the first tubeless automobile tire. In 1909, the company branched out into the aviation industry, producing the first aircraft tires. Before this point, the pilots used bicycle tires primarily on their aircraft. Three years later, Goodyear created his first blimp. The company also developed the first bulletproof gas tank for aircraft in 1919. The company continued to lead the industry in the creation of new products throughout the twentieth century.

While much of the company's business is dedicated to passenger tires, it also manufactures tires for trucks and buses, farm vehicles, industrial equipment and aircraft, and industrial rubber, chemical, and plastic products. Goodyear was a pioneer in the use of polyester cord fabric for tires. The company also produces enriched uranium for both military and commercial use and holds agricultural and resort properties in the southwestern United States.

Known more for its marketing skills than its technological innovation, Goodyear has marketed its products overseas, with foreign sales contributing more than one-fourth of corporate revenues. The company's most visible corporate symbol is the Goodyear blimp, which has been used as a national promotional tool for more than 60 years. There are three blimps in the United States and one blimp in Europe.
