The oil clearances on an engine are designed with the idea that the engine oil will have a specified viscosity while the engine is at the proper temperature. When engine oil becomes too overheated, it thins down and loses its capacity to prevent metal-to-metal interaction. The components wear out due to this contact, raising the oil clearance. Oil pressure drops as a result, and the engine fails soon after.
Engine oil not only lubricates but also cools the engine. Oil jets cool the bottom part of the pistons in certain engines, and oil not only lubricates but also transports a large amount of heat out from turbocharger bearings. However, it will lose this cooling ability if the oil temperature rises too high. Overheated pistons can break or cause an explosion, damaging the engine and reducing power, and overheating can harm turbocharger bearings.
On a conventional road vehicle traveling at highway speeds, the air flowing around the oil pan is sufficient to transfer the heat away from the engine oil. However, performance and racing engines operating at high RPMs may quickly raise the oil temperature beyond the oil pan's cooling capacity, even on the deep sump and finned pans. When this happens, an engine oil cooler is required. An oil cooler functions similarly to a small radiator. Oil runs through it and transmits heat to the surrounding air, allowing the oil to remain within its ideal working temperature range, maintaining viscosity and reducing oil breakdown.
Engine oil coolers come in various designs, featuring plate and fin, tube and fin, and stacked plate coolers. The oil travels via serpentine tubes connected to fins that distribute heat to the air in the tube and fin coolers. Oil flows via plates linked to cooling fins in plate and fin coolers shaped like radiators. They are more productive because of their increased surface area. The most economical coolers are stacked plate coolers with bigger plates than plate and fin coolers. Turbulators are found in most coolers and help to dissipate heat.
Number of runs - the number of times the oil cycles the length of the cooler before departing - is another way to classify oil coolers. Heat dissipation increases as the number of passes increases. Aside from the cooler, most of our packages include fittings, lines, a mounting bracket, and a sandwich adapter that fits between the engine and the oil filter. Some kits connect the lines to an oil filter relocation mount instead of an adapter. The cooler should ideally be placed where it will receive enough airflow. If you have to put it somewhere where there isn't much ventilation, we have coolers with a built-in 12V cooling fan.
