Oil used for lubrication has a large cooling effect. The oil cooler absorbs the heat from the lubricant and transfers it to the ambient air or radiator coolant. A separate oil cooler is usually required for automatic gearbox oil. It is usual to see vehicles with engine oil cooled by a separate exchanger.
A specialized oil cooler is essential, especially in high-performance or smaller engine cars. Some car types incorporate the oil cooler inside the radiator water tank. The coolant aids the heat exchange procedure in this situation. An automatic gearbox oil cooler is frequently constructed as a stand-alone unit in modern automobiles and installed independently in the engine compartment or on the engine block.
Many people are aware that motor oil lubricates and cools engine bearings and moving components, but few are aware that oil also cools parts. Splash from the connecting rods and oil jets on certain engines cools the base of the pistons, but the oil also transports heat away from all the components it meets.
