This latest project car has been one of a whole different caliber. The McLaren MP4-12C also known as the 12C is pretty much a race car or animal in a shell. The inside is weak, the Iris1 electronics are about as good as my parents 88 Astro Van, but god damn that V8 twin turbo engine makes it all worth it. The engineering of the suspension is beyond insane and when you hit the brakes, the rear wing “airbrake” shoots up telling others, “this ain’t no basic sports car!” But a project car would not be a project car without a little tweaking. Since around 2003, we have worked with Vorsteiner on many of our Project Cars including our famed Mercedes C63, Porsche 997 Turbo, BMW M3 E90, and even helped them with the R&D of the new 991 Turbo aero kit. But now its the turn of our McLaren to get kitted out.
We had the paint and fitment done at our friends Allard Collision in Chandler, Arizona. Ever since they did the oh so amazing job on our Vorsteiner Panamera Turbo kit, we keep using them for our own cars and customers. The Vorsteiner McLaren kit has qwerks like most aftermarket kits do. Having used everything under the sun from our Japanese days of C-West, Chargespeed, Seibon, and even top level stuff like TechArt, everything needs work. The Vorsteiner fitment I would give a 98%. There are 2 areas that are just a bit off even after solidly being bolted down. But this could be installation rework that is needed. With the painted lines and offset carbon, the finish is amazing. There is so much carbon fiber going on its very P1’esq.
Going over the parts, there is a lot to discover in the way this Vorsteiner kit brings uniformity to the McLaren. The front bumper features huge air inlets to give much needed cooling. The front lower carbon fiber lip is seperate and even more pronouced than that of the 650S. The bumpers carbon fiber side accents are a nice touch as they flow into the lower side skirt add-ons. The way the side skirts attach make them apart of the car when the doors open and close. Following these to the back is the grand prize of the rear bumper. Its carbon fiber touches and massive rear diffuser really make the rear more punctuated. The diffuser pan is seperate like stock and the rear brake light is still integrated. Now we look up to the active aero wing. If you have seen videos or pictures of the 675, then this kind of makes sense. With the wing on by itself, its hard to make sense of it alone. But with the rest of the kit, it works well with the lines. The full carbon fiber blade still works as a air brake and its sides extend over the rear quarter panels. Its big looking no doubt, but really makes a point this is not a stock McLaren.
There are only a handful of options for the McLaren 12C body. RevoZport, Vorsteiner, crazy stuff like Mansory and DMC. I chose to stick with Vorsteiner because it is made in the USA, amazing customer support, and after doing maybe 6 or 7 personal cars, I feel I get what I want every time! Up next will be a detailed photoshoot and video showing off the addition of our Rotiform Wheels to the project.
