Although most manual transmission cars are a ton of fun to drive, some are terrible. If you have to wait a long time for the revs to come down between shifts, it will be harder to shift smoothly and nearly impossible to shift fast AND smooth. Although some of this rev hang issue can be dialed out with a quality tune, especially on newer turbo cars, part of the problem is mechanical. A heavy flywheel will essentially help the engine maintain its rotation, making it harder to stall, but, the rotational inertia means takes a lot of energy to spin or slow it. To put it simply, a heavy flywheel makes the revs going up and down slower. The new 1.5L Civic uses a pretty heavy flywheel, but now a lightweight option is available through Aasco.
The OEM flywheel uses a dual-mass design like many new cars. Dual Mass is great for reducing noise and vibration, but it’s very heavy. To be more specific, the stock flywheel on the 1.5L Civic Turbo weighs 31 lbs, which surprisingly heavy. This new Aasco flywheel weighs a mere 12.8 lbs, representing a weight reducing of 18.2 lbs! By removing so much rotational mass on the engine, it’s much happier to rev up or down. There may be slightly more noise or vibration, but it’s worth it for many enthusiasts.

Will this cause any check engine lights without a tune or is it totally compatible with the stock tune?
The flywheel was tested on a chassis dyno, as well as on the track with no ECU modifications. So, yes it is compatible with the stock tune and will not cause a check engine light.
