Differences Between BC Racing Coilovers: Which Is Right For You?

Coilovers springs improve the handling of a car by supporting each individual wheel on the vehicle, preventing the chassis from bottoming out, and mitigating or reducing body roll when taking turns and cornering, especially when driving at higher speeds. Coilovers also help to reduce squatting when accelerating and diving when decelerating. Many car enthusiasts prefer coilovers to coil springs because they are adjustable, they allow you to alter your car’s ride height on demand.

Of all the coilovers brands, BC Racing is everyone’s favorite and it has six coilover series namely BR Series, DS Series, RM Series, ER Series, HM Series and ZR Series, and they have all built a name for themselves in the car enthusiasts community. They range from different adjustability scales, budgets, and applications, but they’re all backed by BC’s excellent build quality and reliability. Get to know their differences down below so that you can figure out the right fit for you.

BR Series

These are the most popular of the series, they are affordable price wise and offer good customization especially when it comes to height adjustability. The ride height adjustment on the BR series is actually independent of shock stroke and spring preload which is ideal since it allows the spring preload to be snug regardless of the ride height you choose. The BR series also features 30-clicks of simultaneous compression and rebound adjustments allowing drivers to easily adjust damping for their application and it features front camber plates for those who want camber adjustments on their coilovers.

BR series is ideal for entry-level and daily drivers and also for the occasional track day. Some of it’s unique features that make it different from other BC Racing coilovers include;

  • Mono-tube shock design
  • Ride height adjustment independent of spring preload
  • Front adjustable camber plates
  • 30-Clicks of simultaneous compression and rebound adjustment (damping), allowing quick tweaking of your cars compression/rebound together.
  • Custom spring rates and swift spring upgrades available
  • Fully rebuildable
  • Most BR coilover systems come with pillowball/ solid bearing top mounts to provide the best feedback and to sharpen your steering response
  • Short handling and installation time
  • Dust boot to protect damper seals
  • Pillowball upper mount

RM Series

BC Racing’s inverted RM series coilover come with all of the benefits of the BR series including the 30 click adjustment and separately controlled ride height etc, but improves the design with an inverted monotube damper. By using an inverted coilover unit the damper fluid is moved away from the heat from the braking system, allowing the damper oil to run cooler and with greater stability.

RM series coilovers have reduced unsprung weight, as the heavy parts of the coilover are attached to the chassis rather than the hub carrier. This series is more suited for track or race focused vehicles. It is also much more durable, coping significantly better with high cornering speeds and sticky tires on a race track, and it’s inverted setup tends to handle high-g loads better.

Here are some of the features that make RM series different;

  • Front camber plates and rear camber plates available for application kits
  • Custom spring rates and swift spring upgrades available
  • Fully rebuildable
  • Designed for track applications
  • Inverted mono-tube damper for better fluid cooling
  • Ride height adjustment independent of spring preload
  • 30-Clicks of simultaneous compression and rebound adjustment (damping)

DS Series

This series, previously known as DR series, still boasts the BR benefits and adding digressive piston into their designs. Digressive Piston allows the coilovers to make adjustments based on speed and road conditions. This means that during high speeds, the coilovers stiffen to reduce body roll when you’re taking a fast corner, but they will also soften when you encounter things like a pothole or poor road conditions to soften the ride. This is considered to be the perfect choice for those who are looking for track biased coilovers.

Here are some of the features that make DS series unique:

  • Digressive piston
  • Standard front camber plate and rear camber plates available for application kits
  • Mono-tube shock design
  • Satin chrome finished shock body
  • Ride height adjustment independent of spring preload
  • 30-Clicks Of simultaneous compression and rebound adjustment (damping)
  • Custom spring rates and swift spring upgrades available for some applications
  • Fully rebuildable

ER Series

The ER Series coilovers have high quality and unique features found on the BR and RM series but they also have the additional benefit of external reservoirs and the ability to allow the end user to individually adjust and set compression and rebound damping rates.

ER Series uses the external reservoir to keep the fluid even cooler by placing it even further from the braking system while allowing you to use more dampening fluid, as a result, this is a coilover that is able to take the rigorous abuse of the racetrack for a much longer amount of time while being less likely to overheat.

Some of the features that make ER unique are;

  • Linear twin-piston design
  • Front and rear camber plates
  • 30-clicks of compression adjustment from the external reservoirs
  • Mono-tube damper
  • Ride height adjustment independent of spring preload
  • 30-clicks of rebound adjustment from the top of the damper
  • Front and rear pillow ball mounts standard (no camber plates)
  • Fully rebuildable
  • Custom spring rate and swift spring upgrade are available for most applications

HM Series

BC Racing refers to the HM series as the perfect combination of the ER and RM series. It shares similar features as the ER Series with its inverted damper and external reservoirs to reduce the most heat, the big difference being HM series offers independent, 2-way compression and rebound adjustments on the external reservoirs which is a very good feature for track applications.

Key features that make HM series unique;

  • Engineered for 100% track use
  • 30 levels of separate rebound and compression adjustment
  • Inverted damper design (depending on models)
  • Dual Piston design
  • Teflon coated steel braided lines for external reservoir on inverted dampers and solid stem for double A-arm cars Custom spring rates available
  • Completely rebuild-able
  • Monotube damper design
  • Patented concave lower locking collar
  • Includes swift springs

ZR Series

ZR Series Coilovers offers a 3-way adjustable track ready coilover system and an independent low speed and high speed compression adjustment and separate rebound adjustment. They also offer full height adjustability independent of piston travel and spring preload.

These coilovers are designed to strictly be used on race cars as they can be tweaked to almost any possible preference. While the other coilovers on this list offer 30-way adjustability for rebound, the ZR Series also gives you 15-way low-speed compression and 12-way high-speed compression adjustability.

Features that make it unique include;

  • 3-way adjustable damping controls
  • Engineered for 100% track use
  • Inverted damper design. (depending on models)
  • Dual Piston design. (1 in res., 1 in shock)
  • Teflon coated steel braided lines for external reservoir on inverted dampers and solid stem for double A-arm cars
  • Custom spring rates available
  • Completely rebuildable
  • Monotube damper design
  • Patented concave lower locking collar

Most of the car enthusiasts bounce between the BR series and the DS series. Depending on your car’s purpose, DS is a very good idea even if you don’t visit the track, the digressive piston and adaptive ride quality make it a good option compared to others. The only reason someone wouldn’t go with the DS series compared to the BR maybe their budget., but if you are regularly at the track or if you live somewhere with terrible roads and potholes which is literally everywhere then I’d highly suggest you invest the extra cash for the DS series.
