It’s no secret that Ford’s EcoBoost engines have tons of torque and they’re tuner friendly. The tiny OEM turbochargers provide excellent throttle response and loads of low-end torque, but they produce little top-end power.
Bolt-on modifications are a great way to increase power throughout the entire rev-range, but they don’t fully capitalize on the performance of the 3.5L EcoBoost. In stock or modified form, the only way to realize the potential of the 3.5L EcoBoost is with ECU tuning.
The engine relies on a computer to tell it what to do, and this computer knows what to do based on the input from the engine sensors such as the O2 sensors, MAF/MAP sensor, knock sensors, and many more. With a VR Tuned ECU flash the parameters the computer tries to stay within are altered to make the engine run more aggressively.
For the EcoBoost Raptor, installing a VR Tuned ECU flash results in a power increase of 80HP and 70LB-FT. Aside from the big increase in power, there is a big improvement on throttle response. Although Ford did a pretty good job with the factory ECU tune, it left the Raptor with subpar throttle response which can make the Raptor feel slow off the line or while coming out of corner.
