GPS systems in a UTV can be a life saver and extremely useful. Whether you are racing or just cruising the trails, lefts and rights, ups and downs, can all start to look the same. For the Vivid Racing Project Can-Am X3 we chose to install the new Lowrance Elite-5 TI unit to make our travels easier. At first I thought the Lowrance packages were very expensive making the add-on hard to justify. But when I discovered the new Elite-5 TI Lowrance kit is only about $400, it was a no brainer. With all the mods I have in our Can-Am X3 Max, I needed something compact and that can easily be moved or removed. The Elite-5 TI is about the size of an i-Pad Mini with more depth to it. Featuring a full 5 inch wide touchscreen that is color, its extremely easy to use. You can easily load maps, save way points, and follow your trail back to where you started. I found this the best feature while cruising the surrounding areas of the Glamis Sand Dunes heading back to camp.
Besides its functionality and size, its extremely easy to install. There are 2 main plugs on the back of the unit. One simply requires power and ground. The other is used for boating. Thats right, these can also do sonar for fishing. Its kinda of funny as once you power it on, it asks you what language and if you live by the Sea or Lakes. At first I thought I got the wrong unit but found this to just be optional. Even though it comes with a simple to use pedestal mount, we decided to mount it to the side of our OEM Can-Am media cover using a fully adjustable Ram Mount. This allowed us to easily rotate it out of the way for access to the glove box or simply remove it.
End of day speech…. this is definitely one unit you will want to add and gives you the warm and fuzzy’s while out on the trail. Easy to use, easy to install, I definitely give it a 5 star rating!
