Mission 3 – Race Preppin the Inside

We race our cars, we show our cars, we daily drive our cars. We are not posers, we are not fakes, we simply rip. So when we want to handle, to move, and to drive all out, we require racing gear. As with everything, we do stuff in stages. One of the first things we do now is upgrade interior parts for comfort, style, and function. The factory steering wheel is the first to go, then seats, then we had safety equipment such as harness’ and harness bar or roll cage. For Project 996 we started with 2 parts from Sparco.

The first part we added was the Sparco Lap 5 steering wheel with quick release hub. This steering wheel is part suede, part leather, and part breathable urethane where your hands spend most of the time. The steering wheel is 350mm in diameter which is much smaller then the factory unit. The wheel allows you to have better control over steering response in racing and daily driving conditions. In addition, when you add the quick release system, the wheel is pushed out a couple inches giving the drivers who sit further back, less need to reach out. The steering wheel easily comes off and on with the Formula 1 style quick release. Don’t be afraid…they don’t just pop off. These are the real deal!

Sparco’s wheel includes a horn button, if you decide to use their quick release then you can’t have a horn. In our case, we like to live dangerously! As well the driver airbag is lost. The airbag light will come on, but with a resistor plugged into the airbag clip, this light goes away never to be seen again.

Our second step in interior modification is adding Sparco’s harness bar. Having used these in our Project WRX and EVO VIII, we were very confident in this product and what it will provide us. The Harness bar connects the 2 B Pillars where the seat belts slide up and down. Using jointed tubes, the bar is also braced to the floor. Thus increasing the rigidity of the vehicle and reducing body flex.

With our all new Sparco racing components, we are almost ready for the track. New seats, harness’, and of course some better handling is instore. The Sparco components are all extremely high quality and fit amazing. As used by professional Formula 1, Nascar, and IRL drivers, Sparco definitely is on point with their products.
