With plenty of experience driving both German and Japanese cars, I was fully aware of the sloppy feel the German cars have in the shifter. Not only could I not stand this feeling, but it affected how I could drive the car. What I need was something shorter, went directly into gear, and something that would make the 996 feel like it should, a race car! After giving a call to our friends at B&M, a 996 short shifter showed up at my door. The best part about the B&M shifter is its straight foward, pictured instruction manual that is included. The unit takes about 1 hour to install with simple hand tools. Once on, the driving feel is much improved. The lever is easy to throw in between gears. The height of the shifter is slightly lowered. The B&M reduces some of the play going from gear to gear which gives it a nice firm feel.
