The days of high revving, naturally aspirated Honda engines are gone. Oddly enough, Honda used the same 1.5L turbo in both the Si and base models, but the Si has over 25 more horsepower. This left enthusiasts who wanted a Civic Hatchback Si a little upset, as the base Hatchback has the same engine, but Honda decided to hold it back. Luckily, uncovering the performance that Honda locked up is very easy. There are two ways to go about tuning your Honda: a full ECU flash or a piggyback style tuner. The kit works by plugging into various engine sensors and slightly modifying the sensor signal before it’s sent to the ECU. This tells the ECU to make more power but increasing boost, changing air/fuel ratios, and changing ignition timing. As found from our testing, the Civic 1.5L turbo sees gains of up to 58 horsepower with our tuning box installed. Unfortunately, the tiny OEM turbocharger limits gains at the top of the RPM range, but the low-end and mid-range, where your engine is for the majority of street driving, sees pretty big gains. Plus, it’s easy to uninstall for warranty purposes, making it the perfect tuning solution for the 1.5L turbo Civic.
