Porsche 991 Turbo tuning is now available from VR Tuned via our new multi channel tuning box kit. The Porsche 991 Turbo and Turbo S are able to make 630bhp from our new Tuning Box Kit. The Siemens SDI9 ECU in the cars cannot be read out because of tuning encryption, so conventional OBDII or bench flash tuning is not possible. Where some tuners are taking matching software ID files and uploading them to the car, this can be dangerous and not allow you to revert back to your true original file. The Tuning Box kit is a simple plug and play solution that allows you to remove the box or plug the jumper back in for stock mode never affecting the ECU identifications itself. Since this is a mult channel tuning box, it works off of boost pressure, manifold pressure, and crankshaft sensor to deliver a very strong increase in horsepower and torque whether in sport or standard mode.
The harness installs in about 1 hour follow the detailed instructions linked below. The 2 pressure sensors are easily accessible from the top of the engine bay and the crankshaft sensor does require the right rear wheel to be removed to gain access behind the compressor inlet pipe. Once clipped in, we connected the tuning box and safely mounted it in-between the air intake snorkels where it would not be as prone to heat or coming loose. The boxes are weather resistance and extremely durable to protect the microprocessor inside.
We tested the Tuning Box Kit on our 2014 Porsche Turbo. The Tuning Boxes were also tested by the manufacture seperately in the UK and Germany. Our test was done on a Mustang all wheel drive dyno using 91 octane. With this setup, we typically see a 20-25% drivetrain loss from the stock crank published horsepower numbers of 520bhp on a Turbo and 560bhp on a Turbo S. 93 octane or 98 ron is preferred for maxium power. We tested the car several times doing 3rd gear pulls with traction control off in both standard and sport mode. Because sport works off the EGT sensors in the turbos, it will produce much higher torque but taper off on the top end if you run it back to back to back as these EGT’s increase. Our car was equipped with stock catalytic converters, a high flow Agency Power muffler, and a set of our Agency Power headers. With the only variable being the tuning box, our baseline numbers were between 436 and 440awhp with torque between 465 and 477 ft/lbs of torque.
With the VR Tuned Tuning Box Kit plugged in, we saw 494 to 499 awhp and 545 to 551 ft/lbs of torque. This gave us average gains of 60whp and 80ft/lbs of torque. To validate these tests we did several tests throughout the day with controlled cooling periods, back to back testing, and using standard and sport mode. Once the dyno tests were completed, we test drove the car on the street which was a very noticeable and drastic difference on the acceleration and pull. As a secondary test, we tried out a 0-60mph with our Performance Box kit. The car is equipped with 21 inch wheels and Pirelli PZero tires running 36psi at all 4 corners as we did our 0-60 with launch control. Slipping through 1st and 2nd gear, the car still did 3.3 seconds compared to the well tested and controlled factory numbers of 3.4 seconds. This was the product that truly transformed the Porsche 991 Turbo into a beast like previous 997 Turbo models. With the addition of our Auto Flash kit, shifting and throttle response can be increased further.
