If you have an air splitter, air under the car is at a low pressure, causing the higher pressure air on the outside and sides of the car to come rushing in. This consequently diminishes ground effect and downforce. Side skirts are used to reduce the amount of high pressure on the side of a car that goes underneath it. The effectiveness of the skirts depends primarily on how close to the ground the lower edge can be maintained.

A vortex generator is another aerodynamic device that that helps prevent air from flowing under the car. Canards, together with vortex generators, generate strong vortices that travel down the sides of a vehicle acting as a barrier. When and if the vortex generators are positioned properly, these strong vortices act in way to keep high-pressure air around the car from entering the low-pressure underbody region. The main outcome of this is the maintenance of more downforce.
