The Jaguar F-Type is one of those sports cars that elegantly stands out amongst the rest of the busy traffic. Boasting a new updated sleek look, the F-Type doesn’t only look good, it really puts some power down on the ground. The impressive stock power figures are brought to us by a 5.0L supercharged V8, with an all-wheel drive drivetrain. Like most of us, this customer was looking to add some real quick power before doing any physical modifications to his! Luckily for him, we had the perfect answer, a VR Tuned ECU Flash.
ECU Flashes can be an incredibly easy way to snatch some extra power out of the stock motor on your car, all without even touching a wrench or power tool. They work by retiming some of the ignition on the computer of your car. ECU Tuning can also change the boost levels on forced induction vehicles to increase boost where needed. On the F-Type, we also made some changes to the torque limiter. Think of ECU Tuning as rewiring the brain of your car to do the same tasks, just incredibly more efficient. Doing all these changes opens up a whole new level of possibilities available to you. ECU flashes have always been a very popular mod due to the ‘bang for your buck’ value. What other mods can you install for cheap that will increase power this much? You can even use ECU Flashing for things not related to power, such as towing and increased MPG. However, in this blog, we’ll stick with just talking power numbers for the F-Type.
The VR Tuned ECU Flash really stands out amongst the other flash files as ours provides a magnitude of additional benefits ontop of the power gains. For example, with the VR Tuned ECU Flash, basic bolt-on performance mods will not require a retune of the vehicle. Adding modifications such as exhausts, pulleys, intakes, and plenums will also not require a retune, as the ECU will adjust itself according to the new hardware. Of course, the same applies to using different fuel types in your car. We also offer different stages of power tuning so you don’t have to go full-on added power if you don’t want to. We assume you’re reading this as an interest in the power gains, so we’ll be focusing mostly on that.
After strapping it down, we ran three baseline stock runs to gather average wheel horsepower and torque figures. Please keep in mind that it’s around 100 degrees here in the dyno room. Therefore, we can expect a little lower than normal performance due to the supercharger not being able to perform at its best. Our results came out to a total of 423 wheel horsepower, and 437 ft/lbs of torque. These numbers aren’t bad, they just aren’t up to our standards. We’re curious to see if we can push F-Type R sort of figures with just our tune. However, we know for a fact that we can push this beast over 500 horsepower pretty easily.
After flashing the ECU, we ran the Jaguar F-Type a couple more times to get average tuned power numbers. We are based in Arizona, and it happens to be in the middle of Summer when we’re running the dyno. Because of this, we are expecting our new power numbers to be a little lower than usual due to excess heat in our dyno room. Our new tuned power numbers came out to 511 wheel horsepower with 502 ft/lbs of torque. That’s a staggering 88 wheel horsepower gain & a gain of 65 ft/lbs of torque with just a tune! Pretty impressive, right? As mentioned earlier, we did alter the torque limiter. Doing this greatly increases our throttle response, allowing us to climb the RPM range way quicker.
In conclusion, ECU flashes are an insanely easy way to increase power quickly. Specifically, with the VR Tuned ECU Flash, you really can’t beat the additional power along with the new benefits. We were able to tune the Jaguar F-Type within 5-10 minutes and gain over 80 horsepower and over 60 ft/lbs of torque. We fully believe that without the 100-degree weather, we could achieve even higher power figures with the same amount of effort.
