Turbo Boosted Porsche Cayman Project Begins

Its been awhile since we have done something really unique here at Vivid Racing, but that is all about to change. Vivid Racing has reconnected with TPC Racing to install and test one of their Porsche Cayman Turbo Kits. You might remember TPC forcing air on our Project 996 with a supercharger. For you race fans, TPC was also the 24hr Rolex champion a couple years back. So why moving away from the supercharger and focusing on the turbo kits? Turbo kits are easier to build power, safer to tune, and simpler for installation. As you can see by the turbo kit contents, the car gets a new header, exhaust, air to water intercooler, and some simple hoses and fittings. Not bad for a bolt on 150 extra horsepower!

So our project begins here with a 2007 Cayman S 6speed. The car is modded with a Milltek exhaust, Milltek Headers, APR Flash, and IPD Plenum. ÂAll these mods, except the headers, will be removed. So as the car sits, we did a baseline dyno run on our Mustang AWD dyno. This could be played 2 ways… 1 is the baseline will be less then the gains quoted by TPC because of the power mods. 2 is this will show you what spending $5000 on bolt ons does compared to $9995 on a turbo kit! Our baseline dyno run on 91 octane was 257rwhp and 225 ft/lbs of torque. Since the Mustang dyno reads much lower then TPC’s DynoJet, their stock Cayman S baseline was at 265rwhp comparatively.

Now that the immediate tests were done for a comparison, the installation will begin. The install is about 25-30 hours for the TPC kit. ÂOnce all the parts are bolted on, we will do a new dyno test. So stay tuned to our Porsche Cayman Turbo Kit Gallery Here for updated pictures. And check back to our Turbo Kit Project Here.

You guys have the best projects. Is this going to become a shop car?

    Subscribed! This should be sweet

Made some headway with the installation. Had to start by gaining access to the motor. As always laying down work mats to protect the fender paint. The engine gets some changes with the intake, plenum, and hoses.

Now we started to mount up the turbo, header pipes, and exhaust pipes with wastegate. The parts are very nicely welded. I personally like how the existing headers are used and then come into 1 merge collector to the turbo. Kinda reminds me of the Subaru "Uppipe". The wastegate is super beefy and personally having external wastegates on my 996TT and 997TT, this will sound mean!

More updates to come so stay tuned to the official gallery here.

This would be so sweet, especially on a Cayman Turbo. Check it out Dan!

Yeah I dig that clear cover. I could make one out of plexiglass here if he wanted one.

Moving on with the project, we just got the meat and potatoes installed including the new injectors, air/water intercooler. exhaust muffler, silicone tube from the turbo compressor to intercooler, silicone tube to the intake. Coming up next will be the front center radiator which is what does the cooling for the intercooler. Check out the pics!

that new exhaust is puuuurty! Love the project, very cool

So where is the intercooler mounted? Trunk mount? Frunk mount?

All that exhaust / wastegate piping looks cherry… Really nice work

Can’t wait to see this thing ripping down the road 🙂

Yeah that thing definetly will be amazing when its done. Always good for surprises^^

Its an air to water intercooler system. The red tube connects to the cooler core which is that greyish "box." Water pump comes with the system which utilizes the front, middle radiator to cool the liquid flowing through the core

Sounds like an interesting concept. I’ve heard of them before but have never seen one. Is this the same as a water-cooled intercooler?

  14. The Youngn says:

    That’s what it is

Here is a little dyno test for ya 🙂 Need to do a datalog and check the tune with TPC as the boost and power was low.

Sounds very smooth. You guys do need to get some new wheels on the beast though.

Put the Cayman S and TPC kit through the paces this weekend. Car was truly amazing. Had fun. Shot the video with a Hoyttech MSR-200 HD cam. We were shooting exterior shots with it mounted on the front bumper. Normally this is a solid mount but the wind did not agree and ripped the cam from car and it shot over the car. We stopped and picked up the unit which was in perfect shape suprisingly. The suction mount was broken off. The bad news is all our good footage was losted as the SD card popped off and after looking for it on the side of the highway for 1 hour, we could not locate it. We did have another SD card so shot some new footage! Enjoy the video 🙂

So here is the wrap up on the Cayman S with the TPC turbo kit…

We delivered the car to the customer who was very happy. We decided to add a Greddy Boost Controller to the unit and set the boost at 5psi. We hid the unit in the glove box which will allow the customer to change if necessary. Here in AZ it is very hot right now and we only have 91oct gas. The wastegate spring pressure would only make about 3.5psi so we we needed more boost to be on target. Since this is a daily driver, we never wanted to test with octane booster or race gas as that would not make sense in this case. We like to give our independent results. As you can see from the YouTube video above, this car is a blast to drive. The overall quality I would give is a 8 out of 10 as some aspects of the kit are just tough given the space and function to make a certain way. The only thing I would personally add to the kit is a blow off valve on the intercooler pipe to relieve the pressure between shifts. Even though it is only making 5psi, there is still a small amount of compressor surge. The installation is a long and tough one. 35hours is what is quoted, but get ready for about 50hours.

Now for the numbers… This car came to us with a couple of mods: Milltek exhaust, Milltek high flow cat headers, IPD Plenum, and REVO ECU Flash. This put the baseline at 256rwhp and 225ft/lbs of torque. Ambient temperature of about 100F. Our best dyno on 91oct and 5.5psi and 100F was 315rwhp as seen here. People doing the math will say that is only a 60HP gain? TPC shows a 150HP gain… Wait. Understand that this baseline had all the mods that most of you do now. TPC tested a BONE stock Cayman S using 93oct and ambient temperature of around 68F. Both the temperature and higher octane makes a HUGE HUGE difference in the cars performance. So there is 2 ways to look at this. First, the turbo kit gains 60HP over standard bolt on mods, not bad. If you look at another Cayman S baseline we did here, you will see that the car on our Mustang Dyno baselined at 218rwhp and 193ft/lbs of torque. Same ambient temp, same Cayman S, same dyno. So really we gained about 100rwhp and 100ft/lbs of torque with the TPC Turbo Kit for the Cayman S. Having had the TPC Supercharger on my own 996C2, we also gained 100rwhp on 91oct proven on our dyno.

So lets talk real world $$$ per horsepower so you can decide how to spend your money.

Milltek Exhaust, Milltek Headers, IPD Plenum, REVO ECU Flash – $6786 + labor for 38rwhp/32ft/lbs

Bone Stock Cayman S with TPC Turbo Kit including all Mods/Tuning – $10500 + labor for 100rwhp/100ft/lbs

Now what would you do 🙂 Check out all the TPC Turbo Options Here.
