Fuses

Fuses

Fuses are electrical devices that are used to protect circuits from overloading. When too much current flows through a circuit, the fuse will "blow" or break the circuit, preventing damage to the wiring. Fuses are typically made of metal wire or strip that is heated by the current passing through it. The wire or strip melts when the current becomes too high, breaking the circuit and stopping the flow of electricity.

There are two main types of fuses: blade type fuses and cartridge type fuses. Blade type fuses have two metal blades that fit into slots in a fuse holder. The blade type fuse is the most common type of fuse used in cars and trucks. Cartridge type fuses have a cylindrical body with two terminals on one end. The cartridge fuse is less common than the blade type fuse, but it is often used in larger electrical systems, such as those found in homes and businesses.

Most fuses are located in a fuse box, which is usually located under the hood of a car or truck, or in an electrical panel in a home or business. Fuse boxes typically have a cover that can be removed to access the fuses inside. Each fuse is labeled with its amperage rating, so you can easily identify which fuse corresponds to which circuit.

If a circuit blows a fuse, it means that there is an overload somewhere in the circuit. To find the source of the problem, you will need to check all of the devices and wiring in the circuit to see if anything is drawing too much current. Once you have found the source of the problem, you can replace the fuse with a new one of the same amperage rating.

When replacing a fuse, it is important to use one that has the correct amperage rating. Using a fuse with a higher amperage rating than what is specified for the circuit can be dangerous and could cause damage to your wiring. If you are not sure what size fuse to use, consult a professional electrician.

Benefits:

  • Provide protection against overloads which can prevent damage to wiring
  • Relatively inexpensive and easy to replace
  • Available in a variety of amperage ratings to suit different circuits

Why You Should Install New Fuses

  • Easier to install than circuit breakers
  • Small and take up less space
  • Can be used in a wide range of applications
