Belt Tensioners

Belt Tensioner | High-Quality Engine Components

Belt tensioners play a critical role in the auxiliary belt drive system's correct operation. A tensioner ensures that the belt is kept at the proper tension during its duty cycle. Other components, such as the alternator and water pump, are likewise protected from unnecessary pressure and malfunction. Furthermore, a tensioner is a comparatively low-cost component to replace. As a result, whenever you replace a multi-ribbed belt, make sure you change the tensioner as well. Furthermore, we suggest replacing all worn parts at about the same time when a pensioner reaches the limit of its service conditions to offer the optimal long-term solution.

Why Should You Put Correct Belt Tensioner?

If the belt tension is too low, the belt will slide, resulting in noise, excessively high temperatures, and premature belt wear, all of which can cause the belt-driven equipment to malfunction. It will expose the belt-driven accessories to considerable wear if the tension is too high.

Symptoms of a Bad Belt Tensioner

Rust and Cracks: Rust flows from the tensioner or leaks between the arm and the bottom. Check the arm, bracket, and housing of the tensioner for cracks or damage. If you don't remove the tensioner, some damage isn't visible. Component wear inside is indicated by rust seeping or dripping. Tensioner "stops" and mounting bolts are the most commonly cracked areas.

Worn Pulley Bearing: Carefully rotate the pulley with the engine off and the belt disconnected. The issue is most likely pulley bearing wear if you hear a noise, detect resistance, or feel roughness. Completely replace the tensioner. Never restore a worn pulley in a used tensioner system; instead, remove the old tensioner assembly, as component failure will eventually happen.

Misaligned Tensioner Arm: Shiny, clean streaks or gouges in the tensioner housing or arm. The most common source of this issue is metal-to-metal friction between the arm and the spring housing.

Tensioner, Idler, and Pulleys

The tensioner and idler pulleys directly impact belt adjustability and sound. The belt will slide if the tensioner is worn out, reducing accessory performance. The alternator charging output, for instance, maybe lowered, causing the battery to run out. The check engine light may illuminate if your vehicle won't start. Slip weakens the belt and causes a screaming noise, and also heat generation that shortens the life of auxiliary pulley bearings. Many tensioners feature a dampening device to reduce vibration. Belt slap is caused by a worn damper, which can cause pulley bearings to break.

A misaligned pulley can cause a belt chirp. Misalignment caused by worn tensioner and idler pulleys can result in excessive heat, damaging the belt and pulley bearings. If you spray water on the rib section of a serpentine belt, you can tell if it's a chirp or a screech. It's a chirp generated by misalignment if the noise stops for a while. It's a screech caused by decreased belt tension if it becomes louder. Suppose you replace the automatic tensioner and idler pulley(s), including the serpentine belt. In that case, you won't have to make such differences because our accessory drive belt kits include everything you need.

The rotating alternator causes drag during deceleration, putting strain on the serpentine belt and tensioner. Many companies utilize alternator decoupler pulleys, which enable the alternator to freewheel while decelerating, reducing pressure, and extending the life of the belt and tensioner.
