Motorcycle Body Armor

It's something we say all the time. When riding a motorcycle, wearing protective gear is essential. The acronym ATGATT (All The Gear, All The Time) is a routine and philosophy to follow when you ride. Riders may avoid most accidents by riding defensively, but when that isn't enough, protective gear, such as motorcycle body armor, could save your life.

Why Motorcycle Body Armor is Important

Body armor is an important item of motorcycle safety equipment that is sometimes overlooked and underappreciated. Helmets are the first item that comes to mind because they cover your head and neck and are the most important protection. Riding with the appropriate helmet increases your chances of escaping a motorbike accident, but what about other protective gear? In the event of an accident, gloves, jacket, riding pants, and riding suits can all help save your skin, preserve your bones, and prevent serious sprains. Each of the things has some form of body armor. The most common type of body armor for motorcycle protective equipment is high-density foam combined with carbon fiber or Kevlar composite abrasion panels. Body armor will protect all main and minor joints with the highest potential impact during an accident from impact and abrasion.

Does Motorcycle Body Armor Work?

The impact of motorcycle-specific riding gear and whether body armor makes a distinction will always be debated. Although few studies on the efficiency of body armor, there is little doubt that wearing it while riding a motorbike provides more protection than riding without it. We've known riders who have escaped high-speed wrecks on a closed track with nothing except a bruised ego. Internal body armor in the protective gear shielded them from the first hit and subsequent abrasion as they slid to a standstill.

What is CE Rating?

When looking for body armor, you may see a CE or EN European rating on the protection or package. Most worldwide brands that sell protective gear in numerous markets use a CE grade to label their products. CE stands for Conformit?? Europ??ene, which means European Conformity in English. Since 1993, the term CE Marking has been used to denote compliance with European motorcycle safety requirements. Although the United States has not formally embraced these standards, most authorities and organizations use them as a guide to determine the equipment's safety standard. On U.S. streets and roads, authorities will not need you to wear CE Mark certified protection equipment, but you may be obliged to do so on a closed race track. The track or sanctioning organization in charge of the event you're competing in will determine this.

Armored Jackets

Motorcycle jackets are usually armored at critical impact locations like the back, shoulders, and elbows. Leather, a Kevlar hybrid, mesh, or textile that is more suited to all-weather conditions are all possibilities. Internal and external pockets and tightening devices around the neck and wrists are common features (straps or snaps). Jackets don't have a set replacement time, so that you could get several years of use out of them. Use your best judgment to determine the state of your jacket and protective armor and when it is time to replace it.

Armored Vests

Armored vests are meant to fit over the body and protect the front, chest, and back. These provide good impact and abrasion security for your chest and back, but not for your arms. Most have a padded interior and a hard abrasion-resistant outer core that you can use underneath a jacket or over a shirt or sweatshirt.

Armored Suits

Riding suits come in various materials and pockets, closure, and material alternatives. Even if it's meant for all-weather riding, you could appreciate a one-piece suit that gives you that racing sensation. Two-piece suits link at the waist to resemble a one-piece and add further weather protection when riding and the one-piece option. You can wear the jacket or pants separately on a ride because a one-piece is an all-or-nothing alternative. The shoulders, elbows, back, legs, hips, and knees are all strategically armored in both suites. To help with wind and weather penetration, they usually include cinch-up wrists and ankles. Leather and a Kevlar hybrid are ideal in the hot summer months, especially if you require additional abrasion resistance. If you plan on riding in the rain or wind, a textile material will keep you dry.
