Why Should I Wear Racing Boots?

Aside from being stylish and attractive to look at, racing boots are specifically made with a feature called Achilles flex openings in the heel areas of the footwear, to allow for full, unimpeded foot extension. Racing boots are extremely important, assuming you want to protect your legs and ankles. If you don't want to invest in a pair of boots specifically designed for motorcycling, you might be able to get a pair of stiff, supportive and protective general purpose boots, such as work boots.

Despite the convenience and comfort of casual riding shoes, there is no substitute for the protection that full-length riding boots provide. Ironically, I'm writing this article with broken fibula and torn ligaments in my right ankle, sustained while wearing riding boots. 

Motorcycle boots are supposed to fit well and be comfortable. If your legs are not comfortable, it will contribute to distraction and fatigue while riding. Motorcycle boots must also provide protection against exhaust pipes, extreme cold and other weather conditions, and road debris. The soles should be flat (rather than heeled), able to stand up to frequent road impacts, be resistant to oil and other chemicals, and maintain good traction with the road, the pegs of the bike and the gear shifter. The ultimate test is coming in a crash. A pair of boots should protect against foot and ankle injuries in most accidents.

To find high-quality motorcycle boots, consider your specific needs first. If your riding needs are specialized, such as motocross, off-road or racing, there are special boots for that purpose and many others. For most casual riders or beginners, however, general motorcycle boots are fine. Typically, they will offer a protective liner in Kevlar, steel or any other material, as well as sufficient structural strength to prevent your feet and ankles from being crushed, wrenched or twisted in a crash. The last important consideration is fit: motorcycle boots should be snug but not tight, worn with socks that keep you comfortable.
