Performance Driveshaft
The driveshaft (also referred to as the propeller shaft or prop shaft) is a part of a car's drivetrain that transfers torque from the engine to the differential and then distributes the torque to the car's wheels for motion. The driveshaft is mostly used for the transmission of torque between parts differentiated by a range since various systems have to be in the vehicle at different positions. As both sections are on opposite sides of the body, a front-engine rear-wheel drive body must have a long driveshaft linking the rear axle to the transmission.
In numerous automobiles, driveshafts are used accordingly, differing widely in cars with separate setups for four-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, and rear-wheel drive with the front engine previously described. Some engines, including motorcycles, rail cars, and naval boats, often use driveshafts.
In order to accommodate for the difference in angle between parts triggered by suspension motion, flexible joints are required and most commonly take the form of cardan joints, also called universal joints or U-Joints. Since this can induce excessive vibration, a double cardan joint is replaced in some implementations. A Rzeppa-type constant velocity, or CV Joint, can be utilized for applications such as 4WD where more intense driveshaft working angles are required. Some cars have two-piece driveshafts due to length and space requirements. The transmission and a central support bearing are connected to the front portion. The rear driveshaft is attached to the differential, but it links to the front driveshaft instead of connecting the front slip yoke to the transmission output shaft. A coupler or flex joint between the transmission output flange and the driveshaft flange is used by certain cars. The coupler absorbs friction and driveline lash, makes up for unit alignment differences, and enables angular motion.
What are the different types of drivetrains?
The type of car you are driving decides the sort of drivetrain mechanism in your car. For rear-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, and front-wheel drive engines, there are different systems.
Front-Wheel Drive (FWD)
The front wheels have the control for a front-wheel drive car. Both the drivetrain features are in the front of the car rather than having a long driveshaft as on a rear-wheel car. This setup uses constant velocity (CV) joints rather than using uniform joints.
Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD)
The rear wheels supply the power of a rear-wheel drive car. A long driveshaft is attached by universal joints to the transmission on one end and the differential on the other end.
All-Wheel Drive (AWD) or Four-Wheel Drive (FWD)
There are two driveshafts on a conventional four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive truck. There is a certain driveshaft as is on a rear-wheel drive vehicle, but there is also an extra front driveshaft attached by u-joints to the front differential and the transfer case.
Signs of a Bad Driveshaft
It can be hard to drive your vehicle because of a weak or failing driveshaft. To know what typical symptoms you should be watching for, read on. A ride to your dealer is in order if your vehicle experiences either of these conditions; they have the know-how to identify and repair the issues with the driveshaft.
Vibration Under the Vehicle
An excessive shaking coming from beneath the vehicle is a typical symptom of a weakening driveshaft. The driveshaft will vibrate due to worn u-joints, couplers, or carrier bearings. It can escalate to more failure to other drivetrain systems if you do not have these components repaired.
Difficulty Turning
If you have problems making turns, it may be a problem with the u-joint. A failed u-joint will prohibit the wheels from spinning properly, rendering the vehicle difficult to drive.
Car Vibrates Upon Acceleration
If you feel a vibration from a halt or low speed while accelerating, a loose u-joint or poor carrier bearing may be to compensate.
Squeaking Noise
A squeaking noise at low revs can be activated by a u-joint that requires lubrication. As long as the u-joint does not display signs of extreme wear, a little amount of grease can get rid of the noise.
It can also be a work for experts to identify a problem with your car. But the possible culprit is wear and tear on your driveshaft and u-joints when it comes to shaking when driving or a clunking, grinding sound when you put your car in gear. Replace out your old parts with quality replacements from Vivid Racing before you hit the last pothole and force your drivetrain off the limit.
Your driveshafts and u-joints will gradually weaken if your ride has traveled miles of the actual highway or just confined to spinning city streets. Although these power-transferring modules are planned for years of robust use, we have you covered when the time is right to reinforce your set-up. Vivid Racing is the ultimate destination for luxury replacement driveshaft parts of aluminum and steel driveshafts from the most reputable manufacturers in the company. So, shop our range and get all you need to complete your wrenching weekend, from universal joints to bearings for help.
