Exterior Trim

ABOUT EXTERIOR TRIM

A piece of exterior trim is often the final component of a restoration project. Chrome, plastic, and stainless steel accents may serve a functional purpose or unify the appearance of a car, truck, SUV, or van. These exterior trims' design flexibility, long-term durability, appealing haptics, and upscale appearance are advantageous. The new material combines the properties of traditional TPU, such as good tensile strength and abrasion resistance, elasticity, excellent impact resistance at low temperatures, and high media resistance, with new characteristics: it has excellent surface properties even at low wall thicknesses, is scratch-, UV-, and weather-resistant, and is easy to maintain.

EXTERIOR TRIM PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS

The exterior trim pieces of your vehicle add the finishing touches to its overall visual appeal, but only if they continue to look clean and fresh on their own. The sun, moisture, age-related deterioration, and collision damage can transform the trim on your automobile into an eyesore. The vast majority of modern automobiles have black plastic trim, as opposed to the chrome that was so prevalent on vintage vehicles. These plastics may complement the aesthetic design of the vehicles while adding minimal weight. Despite the best efforts of the manufacturers to make them durable, they can also be extremely susceptible to the elements. Over time, ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight can cause plastic trim pieces to become faded, fragile, and brittle. Water and oxygen can also contribute to the discoloration of wood trim. The rubber molding that surrounds and seals the windows and doors of your automobile is susceptible to the same damage as the plastic molding. Preventative maintenance can reduce wear and tear on plastic and rubber trim components. Periodic exterior detailing should consist of not only a thorough washing but also the application of a dressing protectant specially formulated to safeguard these components. There are protectants that either enhance shine or dull matte finishes.

In addition, chrome plating is still used to enhance the appearance of many vehicles, especially classic and luxury automobiles. Unfortunately, the layer of chromium that adds luster to metallic exterior trim can experience a variety of issues over time, including flaking and rusting. This deterioration can be caused by nicks in the chrome, extreme weather, saltwater exposure, or rust developing in the underlying metal. The recommended repairs for deteriorating chrome trim depend on the nature of the damage. Chrome trim that is flaking or peeling may require the technician to apply metal epoxy to the inner surface so that the chrome layer can be reapplied. Often, light rust can be removed from chrome by rubbing it with a high-grade steel wool while avoiding further damage. If rust or flaking has reached an irreversible stage, it may be necessary to have the damaged chrome trim part replated. The cost of replating will vary depending on the piece's size. Your auto body technician can assist you in deciding whether to replate the part or simply replace it.
