Hose Clamps

High-Quality Hose Support Clamps

A variety of hoses are installed under the hood of every vehicle. These hoses attach many of the car's operating systems and are crucial to the vehicle's maximum efficiency. The hoses themselves must be in good condition, but the clamps that secure the hoses to different vehicle parts are also critical. The type of auto hose clamps used for each hose and how they are mounted can mean the difference between a car that runs well and one that doesn't. Both cars use engine hose clamps in the engine compartment. Heater hoses and radiator hoses can be used in cooling systems. Vacuum hoses are available for a variety of applications, including brake systems and windscreen wiper fluid. Fuel and hydraulic hoses are also available, but they usually come with built-in fasteners rather than hose clamps. In any case, any given vehicle will have multiple automotive hose clamps.

Why Do We Put Pressure On A Clamp?

Linking a hose to a fitting, whether operating on a plumbing pipe fixture under a sink or conducting automotive servicing, generally requires a bit of pressure to avoid leaks. That's where a hose clamp comes in handy. When most people think of clamps, they think of a two-handed tool that clamps down to keep material in place securely, such as spring clamps, widely used in woodworking. Hose clamps, on the other hand, have a different purpose. These useful devices slip over the end of a hose and clamp down, cutting off the flow and stopping leaks by applying even pressure around the circumference. It can be difficult for those who have never used a hose clamp to select the right hose clamps from the many options available on the market.

Hose clamps are designed to withstand moderate pressures, such as those used in automotive and household applications. The clamp would have to be unwieldy at high pressures, particularly with large hose sizes, to withstand the forces stretching it without causing the hose to slip off the barb or a leak to develop. Compression fittings, dense crimp fittings, or other designs are commonly used for these high-pressure applications. Hose clamps are often used for purposes other than those they were designed, and they are frequently used as a more durable variation of duct tape wherever a gripping band around anything is needed. Screw bands, in particular, are extremely powerful and are much more commonly used for non-plumbing purposes than the other varieties.

Good Hose Support Clamp, No Leakage

Most hose clamps are designed to create a tight seal between the hose and the barb, stopping the working fluid from leaking. They are built to provide equal pressure on all sides, with no holes, to achieve this objective. Wire clamps are an example of this. A simple design would seem to be wrapping a wire around the hose with one end attached to a nut and the other end attached to the screw and tightening the wire to pull the ends of the wire together. However, this would leave a gap under the screw where no pressure is applied, resulting in a leak. To counter this, the more complex and weaker design of overlapping and then pushing the ends apart is used, which ensures pressure across the entire circumference of the hose.

The barb, hose nipple, or beaded tube must be smooth and clear of nicks, scratches, or pollution to ensure a good seal. Slitting stuck hoses will result in a scratch on the fitting, which will trigger a leak. A hose clamp's other purpose is to provide mechanical connection, which keeps the hose connected to a barb, hose nipple, or tube. The clamp is usually mounted on the hose behind the first ramp of the barb or behind the raised area at the end of the hose nipple or tube called a bead and fully around the circumference of the hose nipple or tube called a bead to accomplish this. The clamp would have to stretch to fit over the barb or raised bead if the hose were to slip. The hose is held attached to the barb, hose nipple, or beaded tube in this way.
