Fuel Injectors

ABOUT FUEL INJECTORS

A fuel injector is an electronically controlled mechanical device used to inject or spray fuel into the engine for the preparation of the correct air-fuel mixture, which enables the engine to burn fuel efficiently. Depending on the engine design, the position of the fuel injectors varies, but they are typically mounted on the engine head with the tip inside the combustion chamber. A fuel injector is built similarly to a garden shower nozzle, which is used to spray water on the grass; a fuel injector serves the same purpose as a garden shower nozzle but sprays fuel inside the engine rather than water.

Fuel injectors are a requirement for all automobiles today because they improve the quality of the air-fuel mixture, resulting in enhanced combustion, which in turn increases engine efficiency. Fuel injectors also prevent fuel loss in the form of carbon or unburned particles within the combustion chamber, which has a direct impact on the fuel economy of the vehicle. It has been observed that the mileage and performance of fuel-injected vehicles are superior to those of carbureted vehicles.

TYPES OF FUEL INJECTORS

There are different kinds of fuel injectors. Diesel Fuel Injectors are used to inject or spray diesel directly into the combustion chamber of a diesel engine, where it is then burned by compression. The diesel fuel injector capillary and nozzle are designed to form diesel packets while spraying fuel into the combustion chamber. As diesel is heavier than gasoline, diesel fuel injectors require a greater injection pumping rate. Whereas the gasoline fuel injectors are used to inject or spray gasoline directly or through the intake manifold into the combustion chamber for further combustion by spark, diesel fuel injectors are used to inject or spray diesel fuel directly into the combustion chamber. Depending on the requirement, the capillary and nozzle of gasoline fuel injectors are made smaller or identical to those of diesel fuel injectors. Due to the lighter weight of gasoline compared to diesel, gasoline injectors require less injection pumping than diesel injectors.
