ABOUT FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS

A fuel pressure regulator is a mechanical device used to maintain a constant fuel supply despite fluctuations in demand. It uses the intake manifold pressure to control the fuel rail pressure. As the vehicle's speed increases, the fuel pressure also increases, while at low speeds the fuel pressure decreases. On a gasoline engine with fuel injection, the fuel pressure regulator is typically located at the end of the fuel rail, after all of the injectors. There are two sides to the diaphragm of the fuel regulator. One side receives pressure from the fuel rail, whereas the other side receives boost or vacuum pressure from the inlet port between the inlet port and the throttle body. The fuel pressure regulator shifts fuel pressure according to barometric pressure and driving force. This allows the injector to maintain a fuel-to-boost ratio that is optimal.

THE DESIGN OF A FUEL PRESSURE REGULATOR

The design and operation of the fuel pressure regulator are basic. The ball seat of the bypass valve is managed by a diaphragm. This valve opens and closes to regulate the fuel supply's stability. Connected to the diaphragm is a spring. This spring contains a spring rate set that can be used to adjust the fuel pressure by adjusting the internal spring tension. The spring setting in the regulator determines the pressure in the fuel rails after the fuel injector. As pressure (impulse) is applied to the diaphragm connected to the bypass valve at the top of the regulator, the spring pushes the diaphragm downward to minimize the volume of additional fuel, making it difficult to operate the fuel pump due to the linear increase in boost pressure in the air collector. As the spring is released, the fuel pressure will decrease. When more fuel pressure is allowed to flow to the return side, the fuel pressure on the supply side will decrease. Conversely, reducing the amount of fuel ejected increases the pressure.
