Handbrake
A hand brake, also known as a parking brake, usually takes the form of a hand-operated lever and is typically located on the center console, but can sometimes be found between the driver's seat and the door.
The handbrake uses a cable to apply the rear disk pads or brake shoes and is used when the car is parked to stop it from rolling forward or backward.
To apply it, hold the handgrip, press the button (usually at the end of the grip), and raise the lever.
As you raise it, you'll feel the resistance when the brakes are applied. When you think that the brakes are exerting enough force to hold the car, you release the button, and the pawl moves to the ratchet plate, holding the lever (and the brakes) in place.
How does it work?
The handbrake ois designed to bypass the hydraulic braking system in the event of failure. When the emergency brake is applied, the metal cable is connected to pass through the intermediate lever to increase the pulling power. Then comes the equalizer, which divides the power evenly between the brakes.
In most vehicles, the disk or drum brakes dlare connected to the mechanical lever. If the disk brake leis used, d elevate aofthe the existing caliper piston will likely be connected to the additional lever and corkscrew. If the drum brakes require use, the metal cable directly connects to the brake shoes' lever.
So, you know how handbrake works and how important it is in the event of a hydraulic brake failure. But don't apply it when the foot brake is still working. It will disrupt the balance of the brake, and the vehicle may lose control.
