ECU is short for "Electronic Control Unit

ECU Tuning, also called Chip Tuning is a method of updating the electronic control units chip with higher performing software. Updating the ECU chips programming can raise horsepower, timing, fuel injection, electronic throttle control and valve timing. In the old days you could only update the ECU Chip by reprogramming it with a OBDII and that it is still done that way today in some cases. But today, you also have the option to unplug the old Electronic Control Unit and plug in a new pre-programmed ECU. Some models do require you to update the programming through software which can be done with most home pc or laptops.
