What is an Intercooler Piping Kit?
Stock plastic or rubber intercooler pipes can be expanded or cracked at high boost levels. In addition to this, the stock pipes have many bends, which are very tight in some places, causing a lot of resistance and a pressure drop. Vivid Racing Piping kits are made of aluminum for enhanced durability and safety. The pipes have been redesigned to reduce the number of bends and increase the bend radius to minimize pressure loss and flow resistance.
The piping kit replaces the turbocharger with the intercooler and the intercooler with the inlet manifold. A convenient kit that allows the replacement of boost pipes that can often pop off in higher boost use and is recommended for tuning where the stock intercooler is still used.
What is an Intercooler?
The intercooler works by cooling the air. An intercooler provides denser, more oxygen-rich air to the engine, thus improving the combustion by allowing more fuel to be burned. It also increases reliability as it allows for a more consistent temperature of intake air to the engine, allowing the engine's air-fuel ratio to remain at a safe level.
Turbochargers work by compressing air, increasing its density before it reaches the cylinders of the engine. By squeezing more air into each cylinder, the motor can burn proportionally more fuel, creating more power with each explosion. This compressing process generates a lot of heat and increases the temperature of the air entering the engine. Unfortunately, as the air gets hotter, it also becomes less dense, reducing the amount of oxygen available in each cylinder and detrimental to performance.
Intercoolers work like radiators, using fins to extract heat from the core of the intercooler. Airflow through the fins is needed to function effectively, which is one of the downsides of air-to-air intercoolers. However, this problem is usually so minor that it's negligible.
