What Are Helmet Neck Rolls And What Do They Do?

Also known as helmet support, a neck roll is a device worn around the neck and secured with a velcro closure. It is used strictly to support the helmet. Neck rolls are constructed from flame retardant materials that protect the neck from fire. Neck rolls distribute impact energy from the neck area across other parts of the body – preventing excess head movement and critical damage to cervical neck bones, collarbone, and sternum. For reference, the sternum (breastbone) is a long, flat bone running vertically from the horizontal collarbone down the center of the chest to form the front of the rib cage. The sternum, along with the collarbone, protects the lungs, major blood vessels, and the heart from external injuries.

Neck braces also protect the neck by ensuring that the seven neck bones that make up the top of the spinal column are not crushed or broken as the head is flung past its normal safe range of motion. This is when spinal nerve damage occurs, usually resulting in degrees of paralysis or death.

For a comfortable and proper fit, most neck braces feature adjustable flaps on the back and/or front of the bracelet that allow you to tailor exactly how the entire bracelet sits on your body. Some braces may have a number of fixed positions and angle settings or maybe infinitely adjustable via a rotating handle.
