The Scorpion Zero is a Street/Sport Truck All-Season tire for utility vehicles and trucks based on Pirelli's iconic P Zero performance tires. The Scorpion Zero was created to provide year-round traction and control for light truck drivers who use their vehicles mostly on the road in a variety of weather situations, including light snow on occasion.
The Scorpion Zero radial's tread formula is shaped into a single Z or double intermediate tread block, based on the tire size, that can provide quick steering, increased cornering, and braking capacity. Water is evacuated through lateral grooves and broad circumferential grooves to prevent hydroplaning and improve wet weather grip. Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires blend high-speed precision with quiet performance.
In many aspects, you may compare this tire to Pirelli's own Scorpion STR tire, and it's easy to understand why the Zero wins. That is, except one crucial region.
Instead of the traditional five rows of tread blocks, the Scorpion Zero uses a Z-shaped design, with either one giant Z or two rows of smaller Zs, based on the tire. The design serves a useful purpose to give a targeted core tread area to improve performance and grip, thanks to some creative branding on Pirelli's part. This, paired with the tire's unique tread compound, makes it stand out in dry weather handling, providing the kind of grip you'd expect from a Pirelli tire.
If you look at the outer tread blocks, you'll notice that each of the shoulder blocks is attached in pairs to the one next to it, resulting in a bigger contact patch, especially in the corners. However, we believe that the tire's handling ability is its best characteristic. So pay attention to performance-oriented drivers.
Wet weather traction is still good, and the tire has lots of water evacuation capabilities. Meanwhile, the Scorpion Zero's Z shape and ample siping provide more traction on uneven surfaces, providing traction on dirt and grass. And, despite all of this, you still get a quiet and pleasant ride, as well as a softer ride than the Scorpion STR. We wouldn't expect anything less from a Pirelli.
If this tire has any flaws, it's that the increased grip comes at the expense of tread life. In truth, Pirelli does not provide a treadwear warranty for this tire (although some websites incorrectly say it has a 70,000-mile warranty), and several owners have reported premature wear.
