Bridgestone's Max Performance Summer self-supporting run-flat tire, the Potenza S001 RFT (Run-Flat Tire), is created as Original Equipment only for BMW 3 Series sedans starting with the 2012 model year F30 chassis vehicles. The Potenza S001 RFT is developed to provide temporary prolonged mobility for a distance of 50 miles at speeds up to 50 mph even after a puncture has caused total air pressure loss. It also provides performance in sports in both dry and rainy situations. However, they are not designed to be operated in near-freezing conditions, through snow, or on ice, as are all summer tires.
To improve dry road steering responsiveness, excellent stability, and cornering finesse, Potenza S001 RFT tires have an asymmetric design with a wide interlocking tread block, outer shoulder, and a center circumferential rib. To aid resist hydroplaning, notches in the shoulders evacuate water to the edges, while high-angle lateral grooves in the intermediate ribs push water into the large circumferential grooves.
Internally, the tire has a lightweight belt package with twin steel belts reinforced by a spirally wrapped aramid/nylon cord strengthening that decreases rolling resistance, improves the comfortable ride, and guarantees excellent durability. Bridgestone Side Sustain Run-Flat technology strengthened sidewalls are also included in the Potenza S001 RFT's internal construction to help support the car if a puncture leads to a lack of air pressure.
Because of the Potenza S001 RFT's traction and handling characteristics, Bridgestone suggests using them in sets of four to get the optimum handling characteristics and tire efficiency. Other tire models, like the Potenza RE050 RFT, Potenza RE050A I RFT, Potenza RE050A RFT, and Potenza RE050A II RFT, may not be paired with Potenza S001 RFT tires.
Tires with the letters MOExtended or MOE on their sidewalls have run-flat-like qualities in that they provide limited temporary extended mobility when a puncture results in total loss of air pressure. MOExtended or MOE tires will not have the same speed or distance stamina as standard run-flat tires. Hence you should not use them in any circumstance where a traditional run-flat tire is necessary.
