ABOUT TRANFER CASE

A transfer case is a component of four-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive, and other vehicles with multiple powered axles. They are located between the transmission and the axles, with a driveshaft connecting each axle. The transfer case (or transfer box) splits the transmission's power and distributes it to each of the powered axles. This can be accomplished with either gears or a chain drive in a transfer case. While a chain drive system reduces weight and noise, gears are preferred in high torque applications such as heavy construction equipment because they are more reliable and durable. Bearings, motors, gears, housing adapters, shafts, flanges, switches, and the transfer case assembly are all common components in a transfer case. Seals, gaskets, and o-rings ensure that the entire transfer case is properly sealed to keep transfer case oil in place and that all parts fit together smoothly and securely.

WHY CHOOSE TRANSFER CASE?

A single driveshaft can deliver power to a single axle in a vehicle or machine with a single axle, but power must be divided and sent to each axle in a machine with multiple powered axles. This transferring of power from one axle to the other is done by the transfer case. While transfer cases are common in vehicles with multiple powered axles, heavy construction equipment transfer cases frequently include one or even more sets of low range gears to provide the extra torque required to meet their specific demands. A well-built and designed transfer case will provide a long life of great work with proper care and maintenance, but given the transfer case's intense, torque-heavy requirements, it should be monitored for failure. Grinding or humming noises coming from under the machine, as well as erratic movement of the machine, such as slipping or lurching, are all signs of a failing transfer case. If necessary, a failing transfer case can be repaired or even replaced.
