Tuning cables are designed to connect a vehicle's ECU (Engine Control Unit) to a computer for the purpose of tuning the engine. A typical tuning cable will have a USB connection on one end and an OBD-II connection on the other.

Tuning cables work for the purpose of reading and writing data. The process of tuning a vehicle is often referred to as "flashing" because it involves writing new software (or firmware) to the ECU. This new software can be used to change the way the engine runs, improve performance, or add new features such as launch control or no-lift shifts.

In relation, the main difference between a standard OBD-II cable and a tuning cable is that tuning cables often have special features that make them more suitable for use with TunerPro, Moates Burn2, or similar software. These extra features can include support for high baud rates (up to 921600 baud), FTDI chipset, and built-in adapter.

Support for high baud rates is important for some newer vehicles which have very fast ECUs while FTDI chipset is important for compatibility with some older laptop computers. In addition, the built-in adapter for Toyota/Lexus vehicles allows the cable to be used with vehicles that use a different pinout for the OBD-II port.

One important thing you need to know is what type of vehicle you have. The most common types of vehicles that use tuning cables are GM (General Motors) vehicles such as Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC; Ford vehicles including Mustang, F-150, Focus, and Explorer; and Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles such as RAM, Challenger, Charger, and Wrangler.
