Introducing Carrilloy: Our Proprietary Steel

Our secret to strength? It’s all in the steel. CP-Carrillo uses a unique alloy called Carrilloy, which is a blend of chrome, nickel, moly, and vanadium. This special formulation meets all VAR (vacuum arc re-melt ASTM) standards. We’ve refined an existing SAE specification to tighten the acceptable attributes during manufacturing. To ensure quality, the heat is validated by both the supplier and an independent metallurgist, confirming that the steel meets our high physical and chemical property standards.

The Importance of Fasteners

When it comes to high-performance connecting rods, the fastener system is crucial. Proper installation according to our guidelines, along with the recommended lubricant, is essential for optimal performance. With nearly fifty years of experience, CP-Carrillo has become a leader in fastener technology in the connecting rod industry. Our designs are based on known yield loads, ensuring that during the linear stretch of the bolt, we never reach that critical load. We recommend a stretch value of 80% of the yield load, calculated using a tension-torque diagram.

While torque is commonly used for tightening fasteners, we prefer the stretch method. Why? Because torque can be influenced by various factors that may affect the true preload you’re aiming for—like the lubricant used, thread condition, and dimensional integrity. By using the stretch method, we’ve found that high-quality fasteners show the least deviation, leading to the proper preload every time.
