If you’re looking to seriously upgrade your Mazda RX-7's cooling system, let me tell you about this intercooler kit. We put it through the wringer on our shop car, a bright yellow FD that’s running a T66 turbo and a Haltech setup, among other mods. Initially, we had an Apexi FMIC kit in there, and while it did okay, we noticed the charge air temps creeping up to 140-150 degrees. That’s when things started to get dicey—detonation in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears, which we caught using a J&S Knock sensor. Plus, coolant temps were regularly soaring past 210 degrees. That was all with a pump gas tune set to 21 psi and a conservative 10.5 AFR at 10 degrees ignition timing.
Then we switched to this ETS intercooler kit, and wow, what a difference! Charge air temps dropped to a cool 110 degrees, with the highest we’ve seen being 122 degrees. That drop in temperature allowed us to crank it up to 23 psi on pump gas without any hint of detonation. As for the coolant, it now hangs out around 185-195 degrees, never exceeding 200. And all of this fits nicely behind a stock bumper. We've even had customers with body kits report even lower temps—talk about a win!
Now, let’s get into the nitty-gritty:
As for installation, it’s straightforward but does require some cutting of the core support and the removal of the bumper support. But trust me, the clean setup you get is totally worth it.
One of the best parts? This intercooler fills up the entire grill area, giving your RX-7 a killer look. It works seamlessly with both USA and JDM fog lights, plus it looks great with most aftermarket body kits.
In terms of fitment, this kit is specifically designed for the Mazda RX-7 from 1993 to 1995. So if you’re ready to keep things cool and boost your performance, this is the way to go!
